Spain passed a new law considering pets’ welfare and feelings when couples divorce or break up. The new law would recognize pets as sentient beings especially in the case where couples seek shared custody of their animals.
This trend is from other similar decisions in France and Portugal. One attorney explained that when family separates, animals as part of the family must be regulated with the same importance as the fate of other family members.
Besides Spain, many other countries are starting to move toward a legal process of recognizing animals as sentient beings as having emotions. High pet ownership also justifies legislation's decision in strengthening animal rights in the realm of family law.
