When Porn is Sex Ed: What Teenagers Are Learning From Online Porn

Maggie Jones wrote a fascinating in depth particle for the New York Times Sunday Magazine – she writes that American adolescents watch much more pornography than their parents know — and it’s shaping their ideas about pleasure, power and intimacy.

In a related article the Times in the UK reported on fears that the new generation of adolescents are learning about sex from online pornography have prompted authorities in Boston to teach teenagers how to critically evaluate the videos.

Pupils from two dozen schools in the city have begun taking a course of five weekly classes in which they learn about the effects and underlying assumptions of porn.

The voluntary course, The Truth About Pornography: A Pornography-Literacy Curriculum for High School Students Designed to Reduce Sexual and Dating Violence, is funded by the city’s public health agency and is unconnected with the school system.

It was partly compiled by Emily Rothman, an associate professor at Boston University’s School of Public Health, who has studied the use of porn by adolescents and dating violence among teenagers
